About Taraloka

Pond and buildings at Taraloka

Started in 1985, Taraloka is a Women's Buddhist Community and Retreat Centre set on the Welsh/Shropshire border. Originally it was a run-down farm in the Shropshire countryside, gradually being converted over the years by many different women all of whom realised the importance of providing a context for women in which the practice of meditation and Buddhism could be developed and deepened.

Established now for over 20 years, the aim of Taraloka is to help women of all ages and from all walks of life to contact and realise their potential. The retreats are characterised by their friendliness and a sense of ease in the exploration of meditation and the relevance of Buddhist teaching in contemporary life.

If you're not sure about coming on a retreat, why not come to our free Open Day in July 2008 and have a look around?

'Taraloka' is a Retreat Centre of the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, which seeks to establish Buddhist principles in the modern world. The name 'Taraloka' means 'Realm of Tara' - the female Bodhisattva of compassion.

In 2006 Taraloka was named 'Retreat Centre of the Year' by The Good Retreat Guide.
