The Taraloka Community

At the heart of Taraloka is a small community of women who come from all over the world, living and working together within the framework of meditation and Buddhist practice. Some of us are responsible for  the practical aspects of running the retreat centre whilst others focus on teaching and leading retreats. All of us are either ordained members of the Western Buddhist Order or training to join the Order.

Saddhanandi has been involved with the FWBO since 1983. For most of that time she has lived and worked with teams of women, starting in Glasgow and then moving to Taraloka in 1994. She was ordained into the Western Buddhist Order in 1995 and became Chairwoman of Taraloka in 2000. She sees her practice mainly in terms of developing metta and mindfulness, following a path of 'becoming more human'.

Vajragita first contacted the FWBO in 1975. At that time she was living in her home country Saddhanandi, Vajragita, Kulaprabha, Holland, and working as an occupational therapist. In 1976, she started FWBO activities in Holland and in was ordained in 1981. Later she was the co-founder of the FWBO Centre in Amsterdam. In 1997 Vajragita moved to Taraloka to help develop retreats, particularly meditation retreats for Mitras and for women who have asked for Ordination. In 2005, she conducted her first Ordination as a Private Preceptor.

Kulaprabha has been practising within the FWBO for 28 years, first contacting the Dharma whilst working as a scientist in Glasgow. She was ordained in 1988. During most of her Buddhist life she lived with her husband and daughter, but, once her daughter had left home, Kulaprabha decided to do the same and moved to Taraloka in 2002. She has led many retreats, developing particular themes such as the Brahma Viharas meditation practices and a variety of reflections on conditioned co-production. She also co-ordinates retreats for women study leaders and Order meditation retreats.

Shubhavyuha Shubhavyuhamoved to Taraloka in 2004. She first contacted the FWBO in 1990 when travelling. She was ordained in 2001 and lived and worked for five years at the Vijayaloka Retreat Centre in Sydney, before that she worked in rehabilitation with people who are blind or vision impaired. Shubhavyuha loves meditation, leading many introductory events and she manages the publicity for Taraloka.

Sanghajivani contacted the FWBO in Norwich in 1994. SanghajivaniShe then started working in the local Evolution shop and has worked in Buddhist teams ever since. She was ordained in 2003 and moved to Taraloka in 2004. She leads introductory events at Taraloka and is manager of the team here, as well as looking after the garden and maintenance work. Her interest is in communication and the creation of beautiful shrines.

Ratnasuri Ratnasuri was ordained in 1983 and is a founder member of Taraloka having moved here in 1985 at the start of the project. Now in her eighties she is retired from public activities but remains a pivotal member of the community. A former artist, she spends her time reading poetry, listening to music and growing orange trees.

Hazel Hazel was based in Brighton before moving to Taraloka in 2004. She has a background in nursing and Management Training. She loves meditation and is dedicated to making that available to all women. She is the Catering Manager at Taraloka and supports many retreats
