'First of all you have the View, your basic spiritual outlook upon life, your "philosophy"'. (Sangharakshita)
Profound View Retreats
Kulaprabha and Saddhanandi
Views are subtle and far-reaching; they underpin not only the spiritual path but also our whole outlook on life. To understand our 'view' is to understand ourselves
more fully, heart and mind together.
These two retreats will introduce and explore various 'views' held by different schools of Buddhism, looking at how they describe Reality and the nature of
experience, how they developed historically and how they manifest in practice. As individuals we will probably relate more easily to particular 'views' depending on our own inclinations and
beliefs; by exploring a range of 'views' it is possible to come to a deeper understanding of the values and attitudes underpinning our lives.
1) The Promise of Buddhahood
10-17 February Suggested donation: £252/£196/£154
Three views:
a) Freedom Exemplified (Pali Canon)
b) Buddha-nature (Tathagatagarbha)
c) Faith and surrender (Pure Land)
On this retreat we will find ourselves amidst three different myths: self-development, self-discovery and self-surrender. Each one has its own strengths and
weaknesses but together they provide a rich mandala of spiritual practice.
2) The Great Debate!
27 Oct-3 Nov Suggested donation: £252/£196/£154
Three views:
a) Pratitya samutpada (the first turning of the Wheel)
b) Sunyata (Madhyamika)
c) Mind-only (Yogacara)
Is Reality best described as 'emptiness' or as something created by our own minds? Either description can provide us with a liberating
and expansive perspective on life. On this retreat we will look at the nature of Reality and how that can be explained from within our actual experience?
