Winter Retreat (2017)
CHERISH THE DOCTRINE, LIVE UNITED AND RADIATE LOVE
This year’s Winter Retreat will focus on the lovely three-part aphorism of Cherish the doctrine, Live united and Radiate love, which is a summary of the Buddhist path to open-heartedness and freedom by Dhardo Rinpoche, one of Sangharakshita’s teachers.
During the retreat we will highlight the Buddhist teachings on loving kindness, initially towards ourselves, then moving outward to friends and loved ones, and then spreading onwards to the whole world. Enjoying the relaxation and friendly atmosphere of a retreat, we can use this time of year to reflect on, share and discuss what we hold dear, exploring our most cherished values and dreams for ourselves and others.
Initially we can gently unfold the petals of loving-kindness towards ourselves, living out a key tenet in the Buddha’s doctrine which forms the foundation of our move forward into the next phase of our lives. Loving kindness is also a quality we can share with others. On the retreat we can explore what living united can mean, delighting in each others’ individuality and differences, within a context of harmony and togetherness. There will be an opportunity to share something that inspires you and opens your heart. If you wish, please bring a poem, song, musical instrument, image or anything else that you might like to share with a friendly and supportive group of women. The Buddha also talked about the way that we can radiate love out into the world, thinking, feeling and acting with an open heart, and how this can transform and change society.
This special time of year, when we have passed the darkest day and light is beginning to return, can be a precious time of renewal. As well as focusing on loving-kindness to ourselves and others, we will also take a look at how to return to our day-to-day lives continuing to be immersed in the beautiful pool of care and kindness to ourselves, others and the world.
The daily programme will include meditation, presentations, meeting in groups, simple ritual, together with time for yourself and to walk in the landscape. There will be some periods of silence to help us go deeper in our experience.
(This is a wonderful opportunity to dwell in a quiet space away from the world for just a few days. We therefore ask you not to bring alcohol or piles of presents and to turn off mobile phones and similar devices.)
