Somatic Movement and Meditation (2018)
So often in modern day life we feel disconnected from our bodies and forget that our body is a living, breathing, feeling organism. Soma means 'conscious living body' and our somatic experience is the unique inner body experience happening in all of us all of the time. We feel and know our body through sensation and movement. By paying attention to sensation and listening to how our body wants to move, we can enter its rich world.
Our body then becomes the 'doorway' through which we listen to ourselves and find a deeper, more open, relaxed and easefull relationship to our experience. Our body holds our emotions, our life stories and the images and movements that can show us how we need to move forward in our lives.
On this weekend, we will focus through meditation and somatic movement on being in our bodies. We will explore movement enquiries such as finding our connection to the earth through yielding our weight and discovering the support of the earth under us. We may work with our bones, connecting through touch and movement with the qualities of bone and how this may support us in our lives. We will explore some structured movements and allow them to open out into more free forms that flow when we start to relax and listen more deeply. We may then take this into drawing, writing and dialogue as ways to help integrate body, heart and mind.
You don't need to have a movement background or have done anything like this before: just an interest in working with your body and a willingness to be curious and perhaps try new things!
I have long been interested in exploring and working with the body. Since being a teenager coming into my body through movement has been a way of resourcing myself. I was ordained in 2004 and have taught yoga at Bodywise in Manchester for many years now. During this time both my personal practice and approach to teaching have changed and evolved ongoingly. It has been important to me to see the practice as a process of enquiry, exploration and creativity.
In recent years, I have been exploring somatic based practices, taking away the structure of yoga and discovering more open ways into the body and movement. I recently completed a 3 year training with the Institute for Integrative Bodywork and Movement Therapy.
