There is a small but very successful bookshop in the lounge at Taraloka which has books, a range of Buddhist artefacts and greeting cards.
The bookshop has a comprehensive collection of books by Sangharakshita and other writers within the Triratna Community with clear indication which are for experienced practitioners and which would be helpful for newcomers. Other sections include: General Buddhism; General Interest; Poetry; Death and Dying; and Books for Children and Young People.
There is a good range of CDs, many offering guided meditations. Buddhist women writers and teachers are well represented.
Buddhist items include singing bowls, incense, prayer flags, statues (rupas) and prayer beads (malas). There is also an interesting selection of cards. Some offer Buddhist images whilst others are attractive, individually produced greeting cards.
The profit from the bookshop helps to support the work of Taraloka. As much as possible, we support independent publishers and book distributors, particularly the Triratna 'right livelihood' company, Windhorse Publications, and also Wisdom books, the main distributors of Buddhist books in the UK. Other stock is mainly bought from individuals and small businesses in the Triratna Community whose work is therefore guided by ethical principles.
It is easier if you pay by cheque or in cash at the time of purchase but it is also possible to pay by debit card at the end of the retreat.
There is also a small, informal library in the Art Room, mainly containing donated books. If it fits with your retreat experience, do browse or borrow a book to read during you time at Taraloka.
Please ask a member of the team if you need further guidance or suggestions about what to read or buy.
