Uncontrived Mindfulness 2025

24 Jan 2025-2 Feb 2025
£0.00 - £95.00
What is the relationship between mindfulness and wisdom? How can a seemingly simple practice of on-going awareness help us to know the nature of reality? On this retreat we will be using the Buddha's words from the Satipatthana Sutta to practise with this profound yet accessible teaching. Through periods of formal and informal meditation, we will cultivate awareness that is both receptive and reflexive. With continuity of practice the quality of our minds is transformed, and a deeper understanding of the way things are is naturally revealed.

Mystery of Mantra 2025

3 Feb 2025-7 Feb 2025

Like magic words, mantra can be a doorway into the archetypal realms of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, cutting through rational concepts, and taking us into a deeper, clearer and more loving engagement with life. Using sound, embodiment and connection with inner and outer energies, we’ll go deeper into the mystery that is mantra. No musical ability or knowledge required.

How do we feel when the meditation bell finally fades or when we catch the pause between the birdsong? What is it like to relax and live within a deeper flow of quietness? The retreat will be silent from the end of the first evening until after lunch on the final day.

Elemental Immersion 2025

21 Feb 2025-2 Mar 2025
£0.00 - £95.00
If we are to Awaken then we need to re-imagine what we are; to allow that we are far more than what we normally assume. We need to understand that we are not separate beings but rather embedded, entangled and participative in a much bigger world. One way to re-imagine what we are is through contemplation of the six elements. 'I would go so far as to say that a universe conceived of as dead cannot be a universe in which one stands any chance of attaining Enlightenment. (Whether you stand any chance in a living universe is of course up to you.)’ Sangharakshita: Living with Awareness.

2 May 2025-5 May 2025

Two thousand five hundred years ago, the Buddha described mindfulness as ‘clear and radiant’ and as ‘stillness, simplicity and contentment’. Breathing in Birdsong 2025

23 May 2025-26 May 2025
£0.00 - £65.00
Early summer is a beautiful time at Taraloka. The air is full of birds and their songs: the deep velvety song of the blackbird; the sweet descending notes of the willow warbler. On this weekend retreat we will interweave meditation with appreciation of birds and their song, finding spaciousness and peacefulness, and allowing ourselves to be saturated with natural beauty. For two and a half thousand years Buddhists have been practising meditating on the breath, cultivating a gentle awareness of that simple yet vital process that keeps us alive. This practice of awareness is not only a way for us to cultivate a sense of spaciousness and ease. It can suffuse all of our experience, bringing a sense of connection with, and appreciation of, all living beings. No previous experience of meditation needed - just curiosity to learn something new, and a willingness to step out into rain or sun. Join in our massive shrine room sleepover (comfy mattresses, pillows and duvets provided) or else come camping with your friends in our wonderful meadows, with the luxury of hot showers and all your meals prepared! Please note that during this retreat a new office will be being built (on the opposite side of the carpark to the retreat centre). There will be some noise.
