teaching freedom

Each of us who comes on retreat at Taraloka has the opportunity to touch something deep within ourselves – something indescribable, loving and free. This changes who we are. And as we change, we change the world around us.  This is the Buddhist path – the path to freedom.

sacred land

In 1985, Taraloka’s seven acres was an intensively-farmed agricultural field. Now, it’s a rich haven for wildlife, with woodlands, ponds and wildflower meadows. It’s home to a multitude of birds, insects, plants and animals.

caring about the earth

A wood pellet boiler for heating, an electric car for transport, a green electricity provider and plans to increase our solar panels all reduce our carbon footprint. We recycle and reuse as much as we can, harvest rainwater for the garden, compost all our organic waste and provide 100% vegan food on retreat.

Communal life for the team and retreatants allows us to cooperate and share, cultivating the contentment that underpins living a simple life that safeguards this precious planet.

history of Taraloka

Everything begins with a vision. In the 1980’s, more and more women were becoming interested in Buddhism and interested in deepening their practice within the Triratna Buddhist Community (then the FWBO). But there were no women’s retreat centres. Find out how Taraloka came into being.
