Taraloka Arts Residency

Taraloka Arts Residency

19 - 23 Jul 2027
Led By: Satyakavi

Call-out for expressions of interest from Mitras and Order Members

In 2027, we’re creating an opportunity for Buddhist artists to come together at Taraloka. We’ll be inviting ten artists / creatives to spend dedicated time creating both individually and as part of a collective within the sacred space of Taraloka.

Although some of the retreat-like elements will be recognisable (meditating together, reporting in, ritual), much of what happens will be led by you, and will evolve out of creative processes happening during the residency. You will have the opportunity to share activities, initiate collaborations and devise rituals, as well as work independently.

Whilst there is no pressure to produce finished work during the residency, we will all be sharing something of what our process has been during this time.

We interested in hearing from all sorts of artists: visual artists, dancers, musicians, writers, performance artists, and any other category! The important thing is that you have a live artistic practice and a live Buddhist practice, and an interest in making links between the two.

To enquire about this event, please read the description below and then contact Katie at the email address provided. Online booking is not possible.

The application process:

We would like to run a relatively intimate event; therefore, we are limiting the residency to ten places.

We ask you to submit an application (contact us for a form) with examples of your work and a statement about why you are inspired to take part in this residency. In selecting artists, we will be considering:

  • Including a variety of disciplines
  • Do we get a sense of a link between your artistic practice and your Buddhist practice?
  • What is your connection to / history with Taraloka?
  • How do you relate to the idea of creating alongside others? (You don’t actively need to be seeking collaboration, but this residency would not suit someone who wants to be on their own the entire time.)

The application deadline is 1st February 2027, but we are accepting applications now. We would also welcome conversations with people who are curious about the residency and want to know more. We will let you know if your application has been successful by 1st March.

The structure:

Monday: arrivals from 4pm, supper, introductions and dedication

Tuesday  – Thursday: A light programme of morning meditation, reporting in, optional activities led by you, and ritual (also potentially led by you). The usual work rota tasks. Space to create in the midst of that.

Friday: Clear up and departure around 10:15

We can provide a limited amount of materials, but would suggest you bring your own equipment, particularly if you have a strong vision of what you would like to use. (Do feel free to ask questions about this.)

Enquiries and applications: Please send all enquiries to katie@taraloka.org.uk.

Suggested donation (in addition to the booking fee): £265 waged / £185 unwaged

Paying for your retreat

Taraloka runs on generosity.

To book a retreat you pay a booking fee. This is the only charge made for coming on retreat. As far as possible, we don’t want anyone’s financial situation to stop them from coming to Taraloka.

At the end of your retreat, you have the opportunity to give money towards Taraloka. If you are able to donate, you are giving to another person who otherwise could not afford to come on retreat. And you are helping to give the gift of Taraloka to the women of the future.

We have suggested donations as these reflect the basic income needed to make a retreat viable. However, they are only suggestions. It is genuinely fine to give ten times these amounts, nothing, or anything in between.

Running on generosity is radical – thank you for being part of that.
