What happens on a retreat?

There’s a structured programme of teaching and practice sessions.  Yet there’s also plenty of free time to enjoy relaxing in front of the fire, wandering in Taraloka’s gardens and grounds, or exploring the beautiful local walks.  Each retreat will have a slightly different programme and activities.  Generally the atmosphere will be friendly and informal.

Example of a day on an introductory retreat

7.30 – 8.45      Gentle bodywork, learning how to sit comfortably for meditation, then doing a led meditation

9.00                 Breakfast

10.45 – 12.45  Hear about the theme of the retreat, then try it out experientially, perhaps with a led meditation.  There’s always a tea break!

1.00                 Lunch

4 – 5.45           Afternoon session – perhaps a small-group discussion to talk about the theme and get to know others on the retreat, then an experiential mindfulness or kindness activity.

6.00                 Supper

8 – 9.15            Evening session – perhaps meditating again, or a lying-down bodyscan, or being introduced to chanting as a practice
